So, you are interested in philosophy?

You want to learn about philosophy, but you do not know where to start. It is hard to tackle, even more so with the hundreds of bad books about it that come out every year. Here is a simple choice: A big serious book with a good index, well written, clear and even sometimes funny which covers most of the history of the Western philosophy. Go to Bertrand Russell's History of Western Philosophy***. It is an old book, but I have not found a better one yet. People who do not like the book have usually shady philo-political motives to dislike it. Russell tells you what he thinks, but always after telling you what each author is about, so you are free to make up your mind and go digging where you please.
OR you could prefer just a book that tackles philosophy from ordinary day adventures: try
Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance by Robert M. Pirsig

You want to start reading an important text without going through a textbook.

I don't recommend it, because philosophers easy to read are hard to understand (it is true from Plato to Wittgenstein). You will understand what they say, but not easily what they are driving at, what they mean. And philosophers easy to understand are usually difficult to read (for instance Spinoza or Kant). But if you want to try, here are three readable philosophy books: Candide and Other Stories by Voltaire, Existentialism Is a Humanism by Sartre, The Poetics of Space by Gaston Bachelard.

You want to be able someday to talk like somebody who reads philosophers

Try The Elegance of the Hedgehog by Muriel Barbery. It is a very pleasant novel.
The Consolations of Philosophy by Alain De Botton is well written and easy to read. I am deeply allergic to the author, but it does not mean it won't suit you.

You are in trouble and you do not know where to turn

Start with The Emotional Intelligence Quick Book by Travis Bradberry and Jean Greaves. Take good care of yourself.
